Oldham Heatwave Brings Renewed Moorland Fire Warning
Oldham is once again feeling the heat, with temperatures across Greater Manchester climbing into the low 30s and dry conditions continuing across the region.
For most of us, that means trying to keep cool, finding some shade and complaining that Britain simply isn't built for this sort of weather.
But for the moorland surrounding Oldham and Saddleworth, prolonged hot and dry weather brings a much more serious concern: wildfire.
Dovestone Moorland Fire Still Fresh in the Memory
Only last month, emergency services were called to a major moorland fire near Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield.
The fire began on Saturday 11 July and developed into a significant incident, with firefighters, specialist wildfire teams, drones and partner agencies working to contain the blaze and prevent it spreading further across the surrounding moorland and woodland.
Smoke from the fire travelled across the area, with residents advised to keep windows and doors closed where necessary and members of the public asked to stay away from Dovestone while emergency crews worked.
The incident was another reminder of just how quickly fire can spread across dry moorland.
Hot Weather Means Higher Fire Risk
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has repeatedly warned people to take extra care during prolonged spells of warm and dry weather.
Grass, heather and peat can become extremely dry, allowing even a small spark or flame to develop into a much larger wildfire.
Disposable barbecues, campfires, cigarettes and fireworks can all create a serious risk when conditions are dry.
Moorland fires are particularly difficult for firefighters because of the terrain, limited access to water and the possibility of fire continuing to burn beneath the surface in peat.
Enjoy the Countryside — But Take Care
Oldham and Saddleworth are home to some fantastic countryside, and places such as Dovestone attract visitors from across Greater Manchester and beyond.
Nobody is saying stay indoors all summer.
But during periods of extreme heat and dry weather, a little common sense can make a huge difference.
Avoid lighting barbecues or fires on the moors, dispose of cigarettes safely, take litter home and follow any restrictions or advice issued by the emergency services.
If you do see a fire developing and there is an immediate danger to people or property, call 999.
Look After Yourself in the Heat Too
The current weather also brings risks for people, particularly older residents, young children and anyone with an existing health condition.
Drink plenty of water, avoid spending long periods in direct sunshine, check on vulnerable friends and neighbours and never leave children or animals inside a parked vehicle.
Oldham's Moorland Is Worth Protecting
The countryside surrounding Oldham is one of the things that makes this part of Greater Manchester special.
Wildfires don't just threaten homes and emergency services. They can destroy wildlife habitats, damage peatland and leave scars on the landscape that can take years to recover.
So while we enjoy the sunshine, it's worth remembering just how vulnerable the moors can become when the ground is this dry.
